The WPA, or Works Projects Administration, 1935-1943, was a New Deal program to hire unemployed workers for construction projects to build public builds, roads, parks, and highways. In 1938 it hired three million people, mostly men. They built over half a million miles of highway in the U.S. The program ended because of WW II.
