Joseph McCarthy was the Junior Senator from the state of Wisconsin in the 1950s who scared millions of people by saying there were members of the Communist Party in the American Government. He stood up in Congress waving a hand full of blank pages saying he had a list of Communist names. This started a witch hunt for Communists in and outside government, lead to the black listing of Hollywood writers and directors, and the loss of jobs and lives for thousands of people. Joe McCarthy lied, and those lies were eventually discovered. He was removed from Congress and died a few years later from alcoholism.
