Rusty Cannon

This cannon was made by Krupp Steel in Germany, and likely placed here by the Spanish circa 1880. It was part of the defense of Havana. This is an early sliding block, breech loading cannon. Some modern cannons still use a similar sliding breech block mechanism. Don't believe it was ever fired in anger as the American forces did not sail directly into Havana harbor during the Spanish-American War.

Central Josefita RR

This railroad ran from a plantation 27 kilometers outside Havana where sugar was hauled to Havana for shipment. The steam engine that pulled this tender is a Rogers 2-6-0 built in Paterson, New Jersey in 1892. The Rogers Locomotive Works was the manufacture of the "General" engine that was involved in the Great Locomotive Chase of the Civil War.

Happy, Happy, Solidarity

These benches and sculpture are part of a neighborhood revitalization project in Havana, Cuba. Local residents shoveled out a mountain of garbage and built something interesting. Artists, funding, and labor was all local. The steps lead up to a community center.

Korda's Photo of Che Guevara

This iconic image of Che Guevara was taken from a photograph by Cuban photographer Alberto Diaz Gutierrez, who signed his work "Korda." He gave a print to a friend who made millions selling the image.  Korda never made a dime from this photo, but it is one of the most recognized photographs of the Twentieth Century, and is still sold today on posters and teeshirts.
