Stacked vertical type is very hard to read. It is better to just rotate the whole words 90 degrees rather than the individual characters... but then maybe it's just me.

That old insurance sign must date from the 1940s or 50s. Just noticed it last week.

I'd wager that company goes back a few decades! It looks suitably reliable, which is what you'd want from your insurance company for sure!
