This may be the world's largest "sailboat." The sails are all computer controlled and likely provide a boost to speed while reducing the consumption of fuel.
It was surprising to see, and appeared to be sailing across our course, but there was no problem because it was going fast and was long gone by the time our courses intersected. We saw it in a couple different places, mostly in the British Virgin Islands.
The water is such a vivid blue. I used to do a lot of sailing but I've never heard of sail assisted cruise ships. Kind of the best of both worlds I guess.
Red, the wind is an amazing force. Sails on boats and wings on aircraft work because of Bernoulli's Principle. The shape causes a low pressure on the front of sails and top of wings with great force. WIth thousands of square feet of sail, that cruise ship gets a real boost to pull it through the water at no cost in fuel and no pollution to the environment.
Sometime everyone needs a little 'lift'.
ReplyDeleteI thought you were kidding and then took another look. Never seen such a thing! Beautiful shots!

DeleteWow! I've seen drawings but this is first photo I have seen of one of these sailing ships. They must be an amazing sight to see in person.

ReplyDeleteSurprising that sails can make such a difference on a large ship. I believe these are made from solid materiel of some kind.
