This past week we toured through some small towns south and east of McCook, Nebraska. These towns are dying because they have lost the ability to support people. School consolidation removed the schools, the railroad closed the line, main street businesses closed, and people moved away unable to sell their houses. Those who remain are unable to leave, and are often elderly.

La emigración hacia las ciudades importantes, con industria t comercios que dan puestos de trabajo a los jóvenes, hace que estos dejen el pueblo abandonando a su suerte a los que se quedan que se ven abocados a una vida solitaria y sin apenas recursos. Luis, you are right about this process being world wide. Urbanization is a real process and it continues today.

ReplyDeleteIt's both sad and tragic. You can still see dilapidated buildings abandoned in the South, especially old barns.
ReplyDeleteFarms have changed dramatically. The "family" farm almost no longer exists. Barns were about the raising of livestock, but this is now rare. Animals are now raised in factory farms. Barns have lost their function.
