New House

This house was built by South Dakota State University's Architecture Department to feature their innovative ideas and energy efficiency. Personally I do not like it for a number of reasons. The exterior is an eye sore. It looks like it was designed by a first grader drawing a house with a ruler. It is built on a lot next to the Brookings Area Habitat For Humanity office, and Habitat was competing to buy this lot to build an affordable house. Habitat lost out to the University with its much deeper pockets. After construction was completed the house is now offered for sale to the public at just under $400,000. The location is in a neighborhood of older, small houses averaging about $150,000 in value. There are no buyers on the horizon after being on the market for four months. Who would want to spend that kind of money to live in an older neighborhood in an ugly house even if it was energy efficient?

  1. I don't think it is that bad. It is not too different and has a quiet color palette.

  2. Is not ugly for me. Efficiency matters. Like the human heart is important, what to do with a nice face but an ugly soul?

  3. I like its clean lines! But it sounds like it was overbuilt for the neighborhood.

  4. I would like to have more windows. Of course nowadays, lots of folks spend most of their time staring at electronic devices, instead of enjoying the sight of trees, grass, flowers, etc. But I would get terribly depressed to spend much time in a room without windows - the second story would be terribly gloomy to me!

  5. I think it looks nice but it could use more windows and some skylights on the roof. I think it's overpriced too.

  6. So everybody has their own opinion on the looks of this house. Would I want tot live in it? No.

  7. Seems like some of us disagree. But that's OK. I'd give it a 6.5 out of ten, after subtracting points for its resemblance to a pole building. I like the pictures.

    1. On a grade scale 6.5 is only a "D", not a good grade. Some pole buildings look better.

  8. I agree with you. At first I thought is was an old barn that had been renovated. But it looks too new overall. Sorry that Habitat lost out. Someone will buy it eventually...probably. But it can always be repurposed as a barn, though! :)
