This was a recommended barn form from 1880s to 1920 for efficiency in dairy farming, and for structural strength in high winds. Often there was a silo in the middle with feed for cows around the center. This reduced labor.
thecontemplativecat here. I saw an octagon barn long ago and it was in terrible falling down stage. It was a sad thing to see, as many old barns from the long ago times.
