Three States Come Together

  1. I wonder a little bit about the reddish (rusty?) pillar on top of the white one. It seems like growing out of the outer edge.
Now - what was the artist's intention? ;-)

    1. Martina, the rusty part of the marker was part of the original which was at this gravel road intersection. It was hit and shattered by a wayward car back in the 1940s, and badly welded back together. I couldn't read anything on the original marker for bad welds and rust. The cement part of the marker was added later and moved away from the intersection by 20 feet or so.

    2. Monument hit by car in 1979, repaired and moved to this location in 1980.

  2. Nice find. I like these kinds of markers. This one really appears to be out in the middle of nowhere, but pretty significant. I'm unclear as to whether or not this marker is on the actual spot where the three states meet, or is the 'flush marker' the correct spot.

    1. Ed, there is a "flush marker" put in by the USGS. It is perhaps ten feet to the southeast of the pillar, but can't be read as it's top has been hit by some kind of machinery, perhaps a mower or snow plow? This would place the monument a few feet inside South Dakota.

  3. I hope that the three states can get along, being so close like this! :-)

    1. Iowa and Minnesota fight hard, but that's usually on the football field and basketball court. SD has only been division one for a few years, so no traditional rivalry.
