This is a model of Ernest Hemingway's yacht Pilar. It was named after his wife, Pauline, called Pilar by him. The boat is 38 feet long and was purchased by Hemingway in 1934 for $7,495 brand new from Wheeler Shipbuilders of Brooklyn, NY. It is currently on display at Hemingway's Cuban house outside Havana, now a museum. It is owned by the Cuban Government, and will probably never be put back into the water.
A classic looking yacht. The original must not be in very good shape or needs extensive repairs to become sea worthy.
ReplyDeleteIt seems to me I saw a model of this boat in the water in the Florida Keys...but I could be wrong. That's happened to me once or twice. :)
ReplyDeleteThat was a fair amount of change in 1934. Nice boat!
ReplyDeleteThat certainly was a lot of money back then!
ReplyDeleteProbably it shouldn't be put back in the water. It's a beautiful yacht. I'm not surprised at the amount. There is a Hemingway museum in Key West -- I wish I could see the one in Cuba!!
ReplyDeleteVery nice - I'd love to have a yacht like this. Thanks for the explanation about Prince Street!
ReplyDeleteLindo e espectacular este belo barco.
