    1. They turn soybeans into oil and meal. The oil is shipped in RR tank cars and is used in thousands of products. The vapor in the air is steam.

    1. This is a big plant that processes many tons of soybeans every day. Lines of semi-trucks deliver beans every day of the year.

  3. I hope the smoke or steam is not of the toxic sort.

    1. Not toxic, just steam. The oil processing uses heat to drive off excess water.

    1. It is in great demand. Soybean oil is the most common edible vegetable oil in the U.S. We consume 38 billion pounds of the stuff annually, or about 65+% of all oil consumed. . It is a major component in processed food with varying amounts of hydrogenation. All margarine and most mayonnaise is made with it. This is a "drying" oil, so it is use in printing ink and cosmetics.

    2. So... we could just use mayonnaise instead of Oil of Olay??

    1. There is heat somewhere in the process, but the outside temperature when this was taken was 32F degrees, very warm for this time of year.

  8. Thanks for all the info. 38 billion pounds is a lot of oil!
