  7. Odd that no one asked me how the gears in the bottom photo were used. After consulting an expert, I believe it is a horse power sweep. A sweep transfers the power of horses walking in a circle to spin a shaft to run machines like a bailer, water pump, grain mill, or any other small machine. These were used before electric and gas motors, or tractors with belt drives. This is 18th and/or 19th Century agricultural technology.

    1. I consulted with Bill about the use of these gears. He said something about sawing off a limb on the tree of knowledge and hoped he would be sitting on the right side. Thank you for your gracious compliment.
