These mountains are called the "Black Hills" because from the prairie they look black. The pine trees that cover much of the Hills reflect little light and look black from a distance. Yes, they are mountains. They are well over a mile above sea level, and rise sharply from the prairie that surrounds them.
This looks like a good area for hiking. I have been to 42 of the states in the lower 48, missing six in the upper Midwest like the Dakotas. I am thinking that some year soon I will take a trip there, if for no other reason than to complete my checkerboard.
ReplyDeleteI drive a ten year old car that I take care of. I don't like parking lot dings either, but I just use one space at a time. Car collectors who think they should use two spaces should leave their cars in the garage.
I love the Black Hills and have been there several times. Such an amazing place. Love your photos.

ReplyDeleteI've never been to the Black Hills although my wife has and tells me of the wonderful things she saw so many years ago. I guess this is another item for my "bucket list." :)
ReplyDeleteThe Black Hills attracts most of the tourists to South Dakota. Unfortunately they are at the other end of the state from us, so we don't get there often. Make the trip. You won't be disappointed. Saw my first live prairie chickens there last weekend among other forms of wildlife.
