This was a recommended barn form from 1880s to 1920 for efficiency in dairy farming, and for structural strength in high winds. Often there was a silo in the middle with feed for cows around the center. This reduced labor.
thecontemplativecat here. I saw an octagon barn long ago and it was in terrible falling down stage. It was a sad thing to see, as many old barns from the long ago times.
So unusual. It reminds me that there were two octagon homes back in my home town. Next time I go back, I hope I remember to look to see if they are still there.
