Once a school closes, especially one tied to a small community, it doesn’t just become a building that’s no longer used. It turns into a kind of memory marker. People who passed through its doors still recognise it in their minds long after the classrooms fall silent.
There's another possiblity: If we can keep from blowing each other up or killing the planet, we will probably be able to return to a style of living because of automation and AI. Working from home, buying stuff from home... Home doesn't have to be in urban concentrations. Young people have already started this with their socialization by screens, even in a group. But the days of agricultural lving are mostly gone.
